The Process of the Process

So today instead of just posting an image and typing some dibble I’m going to talk a little bit about the process I went through to create a new poster for a local booking agent that goes by the name Parade of Flesh for a show at the Nightmare on the 21st with Thrones.

After deciding my concept I laid out some type to start with. Then I cut it up and drew all over it and scanned it back in. To create the info layer for the poster. I always start thinking about the type first. There was another incarnation of the type that I will not share with you.

Printout, graphite, Ink

Next after going through many concepts I decided upon drawing Mr. Prestons beard for the main image. Then I thought it was a little mundane so I through in some vein/intestine/brain matter objects I have enjoyed drawing over the last couple weeks.

Ink on Vellum

Then I had a vision of a transparency layer going over this one to create more interest. At this point in the process I have already put many hours drawing these things and I’m excited about the final image but also incredibly anxious about it as well because it could look like shit and I will have to start over again. Editing though is an important self discipline for a contemporary designer. So here is the last layer that I created.

Now I have the raw elements of the poster. All scanned in so know I want to play around with them in photoshop. Several hours of placing, color changes and cursing I some how came up with two color options. The promoter likes the red one, I do to I think it is more reflective of Thrones music.

If you have any questions please email me.

Next is the screen printing part and that is whole different ball game.

Tiger Dick

2 things: I had fun hanging out with Greg, Gary, and Loopai (sorry if I spelled anyone’s name wrong) at the Cats and Dogs benefit show. Greg donated some of the SST back catalog for donation to the Humane society. So I bought 2 lovely 10″ from him that I will be playing tonight on the Tiger Dick radio show.

The show is from 8 to 10 on Tuesday night and will be on 1670 AM or 1670am.org for the webcast folks.

Also if your in Denton and want to go skate send me an email. This event has already past.

Vibed

I had this idea with overlapping text that was inspired by more of the recent design seen on Almost Skateboards and Burton snowboards. Plus I wanted to maintain my photoshop prowess. Once I was done with it I thought it look good on a skateboard. I think this is a good example of how I work I become inspired by an idea and then while maintaining the original idea it turns into something I was not expecting. I still want to practice with this concept but use different words. This project is also a good example of self editing because I’m not totally sold on it something is missing. It is not as dynamic as I want it to be.

Cereal Friday

Here is a new idea for a comic that has not gone very far. I keep a sketchbook handy at most times with a orange container that has all of my pens and pencils in it. It has become almost a security blanket.

Fuck it

Here is a T-shirt idea I thought of yesterday after much exsistential frustration. After I thought of it I took the ideas advice and skated a ditch by my house, after that I felt much better. This is the rough draft I’m going to add color and screen print it and sell it.

Check it out: www.1670am.org Sarah and I are going to be on from 8-10 this evening. Check out all the awesome archived broadcasts on the site!

There are some things I did not get to play last time that I plan to get on this time around.

Tuesday

I want to show the original drawing for the Drug Mountain 12″. This image was full bleed on the record and ended up being difficult to print since records are not completely flat and have a little rounded edge. I also wanted to show what the original drawings tend to look like. I used to use nothing but computer paper and sharpies but have fallen in love with ink on vellum or marker paper. I do it in black usually using speed ball super black and brushes or nibs. For the finished product look under Gallery in the Portfolio section.

Also I have been doing some B&W drawings that I will post either today or tomorrow.

Labor Day

So my site is live. I also have a shop to where you can by Mass 3. I will be posting and populating the site at will so check in often for more updates. I will leave you with this.

This is my new site

This is the raw material for the back of the new Dust Congress Record.
